Your Story Matters Part 2

In Part 1 we talked about how people of the past brought about changes which impacted lives forever and special reference was made to William Wallace and Mother Teresa. If you missed Part 1, please click here.

Let us discuss another two people, who through their life stories, have made a profound impact on who we are today and how we approach life.

Moses, whom we read of in Exodus in the Bible, was seen as a prophet who received the Ten Commandments from God. What is important to understand, is that we must unpack the life of Moses to really understand what he went through to bring about changes. He was born as a Hebrew and then hidden in a basket to be kept safe from being killed. He was found by the Pharaoh’s daughter and then raised in the palace.

To stand up for another Hebrew, he killed an Egyptian and fled. He ended up in Midian and married the daughter of Jethro. At that point in time, Moses did not know that he was called for greater things. So, a lot happened from being the baby floating in a basket on the Nile River till God speaking to him in the burning bush and calling him to deliver the Israelites from the oppression of Pharaoh. Reading the full story of Moses is so comprehensive and it has so many lessons to learn from.

From Moses we learn that we must remember our identity, be obedient, have unmovable faith, believe that we can do anything, work together with others to have influence and to trust in God’s promises, even if all hope is lost.

Now let us look at the life of Joseph as mentioned in the book of Genesis in the Bible. Jacob had many sons and when Joseph came along, he was seen as the most beloved son, and this resulted in his brothers being jealous of him. We know that because of this, they ended up wanting to get rid of him. They threw him in a pit and sold him to Ishmaelites, who brought him to Egypt.

There he worked as a slave. He was falsely accused and ended up in prison. Many years later after he interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, he was eventually appointed second in command of Egypt. As we read further, we see how God used Joseph to then help his father and brothers with food and a safe place to stay, paving a way for his own people.

So just like William Wallace and Mother Teresa did Moses and Joseph a significant role to play. None of them had it easy and it took a lot of sacrifice to execute what God expected from them. The impact of their stories of sacrifice and trusting God for a vision and mission can be pulled into our own lives today.

In Part 3, we will look at two women who also had a significant impact and from whom we can learn.
