It’s a cold thought, a glimpse into a void you have been oblivious to for most of your life and the reality of it almost feels like you have always just been stuck in that moment right before the glass hits the floor.
At first, you may deny it, in fear of what you will find if you let yourself go there, but if you allow it and you dare to stare at its face, you will see that it is true, you may wish it wasn’t, but it is. Facing this. What is this life? What is the point? Does it not all just seem like an endless chain of obstacles?
You battle through the one just to arrive at another, you spend all your time and effort to build and protect what you hold dear with just barely enough time to enjoy it, but it never stays undisturbed or untainted, you don’t ever get to keep it, you only get to taste it for a while. On the surface so many things appear to be beautiful and pure, but beneath a thin layer of its fragile surface lies a version that is somehow always corrupted in some way and even if it is pure and innocent it’s unlikely to remain that way.
The world and all that humankind have built within its borders have advanced way beyond what most could ever imagine, but still, we slip further and further into chaos with every passing day. There is a barely noticeable requirement for grace, compassion is reserved only for a minority. The earth we live on, the only one we have, is exploited and abused for short-term comfort and wealth.
We have polluted everything, with the one hand, we poison this world and with the other, we try to find a cure. From the very beginning pride and greed have been our legs and we run with them and destroy one another. It seems we will always be at the wrong end of everything and If you want an honest life, nothing is easy, nothing is free, and nothing comes without sacrifice.
But if you listen, there is a voice, if you search for it between the noise and the rush and the voices of those who claim to have the answers, you will hear it. There is an answer, there is meaning beyond this rat race we call life. He knows your name. He can hear every single beat of your heart. He knows what you have done, why you have done it and He loves you just the same.
He is not waiting for you to change first, He is not waiting for you to clean up, or to look or act like the others. He is not interested in who you think you should be before you go and find Him. He came before we ever knew we needed to change, He loved us before we even knew what love was and He has always been holding out His hand even if you weren’t paying any attention.
You won’t get all the answers the very first time you take His hand, but you can take it and hold on to Him and let Him walk with you to teach you and guide you with His wisdom and unfailing love. The world will still be dark, but it’s a darkness we were saved from, He has adopted us and even if we should still stick around here for a while, He will be here and He will never leave our side.
You may not always get what you want, you may not always hear what you want to hear and it definitely isn’t going to get all that much easier, but if you could get to know Him, you will see that nothing about this place matters anyway.
So why are we still here then? Because in this darkness, we can mean something, we can be two things, a lamp and a compass. If we let His light shine through us by trying to be what we were supposed to be, with all the grace and love He is willing to give us on that journey and we love Him and one another, that light will call to others in the darkness, and if they come, we can be the compass to help them find the voice, to find Him, a way out and a way home.
God bless you,
