Whoever we are, we are in an ever-constant pursuit of peace. We don’t always recognise the desire and it might display itself as something completely different most of the time, but at the core, at the very centre of what we really hunger for, is peace.
Some search for it in money and all the things or even people it can buy, some look for it in a bottle, some are searching for it in a needle or a pill, some look in simpler places like adventure, music, achievements, sport and even sex, but what we all have in common, really only is just one desire: inner peace. You can spin around the subject and try to find another explanation but ultimately, whatever you want, will boil down to just that one thing.
There is a fundamental truth to our existence. People deny it, they ignore and claim that it simply just does not exist, and some even rebuke it, but just because you don’t believe it, doesn’t make it any less true. The truth is this: There is One God, we are created in His likeness, by Him and for Him. It is built into our being to find Him.
We were never meant to be separated, but sin came into the world and cut us off from God. From the beginning of mankind, the deceiver has been medalling in our affairs, trying to convince us that we can replace that God sized hole in our being with lust, power, intoxication, money and pride. You see it’s actually really simple if you think about it. Why would the devil even bother with us in the first place?
Have you ever thought about that? Why would he spend all his time trying to derail us if we are not even a threat to him? What he really wants is, Gods throne, but the devil cannot take Gods throne, so he hits where it hurts, he spends all his time and energy trying to rob God of what is dear to Him. YOU are what is dear to Him.
Do you see what you mean to God? The devil won’t waste his time going after something that has no value to God. You are precious to the Father and you are meant to be in union with Him. THAT is the peace you search for; you might not even understand it now but if you peal back the layers of deception you will discover a burning desire to know Him who sits on the throne. People try to drown out this desire to reunite with God because they do not recognise what it is, they try and find it in all sorts of things, because they are deceived.
The devil uses sin to derail us, because in our sin we are separated from God, in our unrighteousness we are made impure and therefore cannot be with God. Sin is the things that are not aligned with His kingdom and His will, so bearing our transgressions, we cannot enter into His Holy Place or presence. We are lost with an unquenchable thirst when we are separated from our shepherd. Humanity was doomed and spoiled forever, polluted by sin.
God gave us a law to guide us and clean us, to try and make us fit for His Kingdom, but man was not strong enough, man was deceivable, and we could not hold up. The law could save us, but we just couldn’t do it, because if we failed one law, then we failed the entire law. Still we were separated, but Gods love was greater.
God’s desire to reunite with His creation was stronger than the grip of sin. In a small little town, in the unlikeliest of places, in the unlikeliest of circumstances, under the covers of the night sky, a child was born, and He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6) We couldn’t get to Him, so He came to us.
He lived blameless and pure, keeping the entire law. He was pure and righteous, a lamb without blemish. He did what we could not do, so that He could give us what we could not have. Peace with God. He laid down His life so that His righteousness could become ours. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8)
