I recently met up with a couple going through marital difficulty due to the wife ‘finding’ things her husband was doing on a social network and via e-mails. She stumbled upon it when he forgot to log off his password. Now here is the problem. The moment a couple hides things from each other and starts protecting their e-mail or social network accounts with passwords, it robs them of intimacy. It creates that ‘secret life’ that many people with a spouse and children find they need to escape to, a world where you are completely in control. Or so you might think! Satan is waiting there for you!!!
When you get married, God says that you become ONE! Now initially that perhaps only refers to the body, but eventually it could also apply to the mind and spirit. If I share my bed with you, my live with you, my dreams with you, how come my e-mail and social network accounts are still password protected???
To calm the critics, I know about healthy boundaries, and to stay a person in your own right, and all that, but when you are talking to people in cyber space, and not sharing it with your spouse, it’s not healthy! It creates opportunities for sin in your life. James 4:7 says: “ Be subject to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Trying to resist the devil in your own strength, is a mistake. Don’t go there!
I know from experience, that the moment you set up a password, so your spouse must start respecting your ‘privacy’, you are setting yourself up for failure. It is the breeding ground for all kinds of evil, and it deprives you of accountability to your spouse. Inappropriate relationships and internet pornography is such a big problem globally, and most of these things start out with a simple harmless password.
My husband and I decided to protest ourselves, by having a combined profile on our social network, and by giving each other our passwords for the e-mail accounts. It’s a sound principle and will protect you against the temptations connected with all things hidden!
If the door to the bedroom is not password protected, neither can the e-mail account be!
Be blessed and share!
