Father God, what an honour to worship You and to be called a daughter of the Most High. Jesus Christ, you have saved me and you have changed me and for that I owe You my life. You are my best friend. Holy Spirit of God, You are the one I adore, the one who leads me, counsels me and truly understands my heart. I live to worship You! Amen.
A couple of years back, I was introduced to fasting and prayer and after experiencing it for the first time, I have never looked back. I fast at least once a week, not with the aim to get anything, but to honour God. No one has told me that I should fast in a specific manner. However, I was told that one should give up something, so that when you think about it, or crave for it, you will be reminded to pray.
In the month of February, our church announced a 21 days of fast and prayer, and my aim was to move closer to God. I must mention that this was not my first time that I fasted for 21 days, but this time it was the most challenging. As I prayed, I could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit even more in my heart and see Him more present in my life. I was challenged in so many ways, with my health being the most prominent. However, I persisted in the name of Jesus and the victory was sweet. As we stepped out of the 21 days of fast and prayer, I had a yearning to move even closer to God and decided to fast and pray for another 40 days. As I made the choice, we found out that my mother was diagnosed with cancer and the family then decided to all join in on a fast for 40 days.
The aim of the fast was not to twist God’s arm or to ask for something specific, because you see as humans we are not allowed to put ultimatums to God. However, we decided to fast and pray, moving closer to Him, moving into His presence and in this process proclaiming His victory on the cross. The 40 days became 52 days and during this time my mother was operated and the tumour was removed successfully. She has been healed, and we praise God! I want to make it clear that God healed my mother, not because we fasted, but because it was His will. Furthermore, we fasted, not asking for healing per say, but proclaiming the victory on the cross, which is healing in every aspect of our lives.
Dear reader, my question to you today is; are you feeling close to God right now in your life? If you are, praise God and remember to stay close to Him all the times, because if you allow yourself to wonder off, like a young child from his mother in a shop, you will very easily find yourself lost and alone. We must remember that satan is walking around, waiting for a moment to challenge us. Should you be reading this message and you are feeling far from God, take a moment and think about it. What has happened and what have you allowed, that pulled you away from God? You see, He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Don’t delay any longer. Turn around and see that He is standing right there waiting for you to come back, without any judgement. Just do it, turn around and ask Him to forgive you and to come into your heart, afresh and anew. Do it right now and experience God’s presence.
There are many ways to get closer to God. Firstly you must commit your life to Jesus and invite Him into your heart and if you have already done that, then make a recommitment if you have to. Choose the right places to go to, listen to the right music and spend your time with people who can build you up spiritually. Go to church and partake in the prayer meetings. Read and study the Bible because then you will start seeing God’s heart. Fast regularly, not asking anything, but seeking more of His presence in your life. Pray continually, for others and yourself. Proclaim instead of complain. Think and talk positively. Stop asking for more all the time and rather say thank you, more often. Remember, Jesus already overcame the world and all that you simply have to do, is to roclaim victory when you are facing challenges.
I want to challenge you dear reader. Are you serious about God and your relationship with Him? Are you feeling alone and trampled on? Are you praying and it feels like your prayers are hitting the ceiling? Well, get closer to God so that you can hear Him, feel Him, experience Him. He says in Ps 46:10, “be still and know that I am God.” He is waiting for you!
You can read the whole book of Esther which is evidence of the power of fasting and prayer. Furthermore, you can also read Mathew 6:16 – 18 and Mark 2:18 – 22.
With lots of love in Jesus Name

PS: Dear reader, please remember that the scripture used are from the New International Version. If the scripture is read in another language and translation it might differ slightly. A verse in the NIV might be a different one in your bible, i.e. Ps 37:3 in the NIV might be Ps 37:4 in your bible. This does not always occur, but has happened in some instances.
